“OK People LOOK…” Vedic Tropical vs Sidereal Madness!

At the beginning of 2012 I finished my research into the actual definition of the zodiac in Sanskrit, Indian classical literature. I came undeniably to the conclusion that a lunar “zodiac” of 27 divisions exists in sidereal space. And that a solar zodiac of 12 divisions coexists in tropical space.

It was not hard to figure this out because the Puranas and Siddhantas I researched were completely clear about it, and there was no contradictory statement to be found anywhere. The hard part was gripping the fact so many centuries of Indian astrologers have mis-represented the solar twelvefold zodiac.

Respecting authority (sastra) over popularity / popular opinion I took the plunge and said, “OK, this is just the way it is and I have to accept that. The 27 nakshatras are sidereal but the 12 signs are tropical.”

Here’s my video, article, and Q & A all about it.

People reacted, and still are, with great confusion and, often, anger. The biggest reaction I get is,

“Who the hell are you to dare to be different?”

My apologies. But may I ask in return, “Who the hell are you to call yourself ‘Vedic’ yet make up your own definitions of things, in defiance of the Surya-Siddhanta and the Puranas, including Vishnu and Bhagavata Purana”?

Conversation usually stops there…

I admit I am not the greatest diplomat.

Among those who aren’t pissed off at me, the next largest group are just baffled and confused by the whole thing:

“You mean I’m a Capricorn now???”

Most of the baffled group are astrological “laypeople” trying to read their own recalculated charts and getting outstandingly confused.

Is this any different than it ever was before, though? The only reason “vedic” astrology fans “like” or “understand” their “vedic chart” is because they’ve wrestled with it for a year or more now to try figure out the sense in it. They take a look at a new version of their chart and are like, “Whoa, Nelly!!!! I just started making progress actually starting to understand the old version – why are you handing me something a bit different all of the sudden???”

Looking at the chart with cross eyes for maybe 5 seconds, to maybe 5 hours… they give up. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

Friends, don’t you realize that all the ladies and gentleman outside of the “vedic” astrological bubble are exactly in the opposite position that you are. They’ve had their tropical charts for 10 years, struggling to beat some sense out of it, and if you hand them a sidereal version of their birth chart they are going to do exactly the same thing you are doing: look at it in bepuzzlement for 5 seconds – 5 hours, and then sigh and say, “this just isn’t for me – there’s no way I’m a Capricorn.”

The layperson’s confusion and inability to correctly read their chart (be it tropical or sidereal) doesn’t say anything about which one is the correct zodiac.  It just shows that laypeople get confused hella easy.

“We Want Proof!!!”

Next up you have the actual practicing astrologers or more learned laypeople who are graciously willing to give me 5 seconds – 5 hours of attention before they too get confused. Their reaction is, “OK, if this is right, show us proof!”

OK guys, can we please be honest here for several minutes:

(a) Since when has astrology of any type been able to scientifically “prove” anything beyond a doubt? Why don’t you ask me to do something feasible.

(b) Astrology is incredibly complex, and is about a boatload more than just the 12 signs – be they tropical or sidereal. Don’t you realize that you can explain things a million different ways from a single chart? Have you ever seen two astrologers interpret even the same chart in the same way?

If we start debating the sidereal chart vs. the tropical chart we are just going to tire each other out because (i) there is a boatload of stuff that is the same in both, (ii) there are dozens of factors involved, almost always counterbalancing one another out when we switch a chart from sidereal to tropical.

Yes, eventually I am going to publish something showing how it is simpler and clearer to make accurate proclamations and predictions with a tropical 12-fold zodiac. No, I can’t show it to you in 5 minutes, because (a) it takes a gainormous amount of work, especially because (b) the vast majority of you  are so dead-set against it, I am going to have to write it out very carefully.

But,really, something has to be said here, or said again: If you purport to be “Vedic” don’t you realize that means you have implicit faith that the Vedas were written by people with lots more experience, understanding and realization than you or I? If you don’t have that faith please stop capitalizing or fantasizing with the terminology “Vedic”, “Hindu”, “Indian”, etc.

If you do have that faith, don’t you realize that if I establish Vedic Literature (viz. Purana and Siddhanta) unequivocally stating that the 12 signs are tropical, while the 27 nakshatras are sidereal -that is the proof!?!?

By the way, have done that and no one has offered any refutation except the innane, “you can’t possibly understand it correctly, who the hell are you?” If you are really “Vedic” you are not going to start asking me for “proof” when I have already given you Vedic proof. What you should be doing is trying to find if and where my understanding of the Vedic sastra is flawed. If you can find that, please show me – clearly. Believe me, being the ambassador for the “Tropical Vedic Revolution” is ridiculously tiring and time consuming, and I would welcome a good excuse to give it up.

And this is not really a call to ultra-pure orthodoxy. It’s a practical scientific statement: You and I are confused. Drop the facade, none of us look at a horoscope and see the future with crystal clarity. All of us are confused and try our very best. We shouldn’t expect that our confused opinions are more important than the authorized opinions of our foundations: the Vedic literature.

“Keep Me Out of This Debate! I don’t want to make enemies, and I don’t want to upset my clients”

After the haters and the confused, this is the next group of reactions: neutrality. It might actually be very wise in a practical sense, but it lacks spine. I’m kind of let down by the number of colleagues who just prefer to ignore the importance of this debate. But I can respect it, and at times, I wish I also didn’t elect myself to become some champion of an increadibly underdog cause.

Then, finally there are about 2% of you – the people who “get it.” I just want to say, THANK YOU!

The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac

The 12 signs of the zodiac are the most popular aspect of astrology these days, by far. There is some deal of good reason why: The signs give the planets resources to work with. So they are very important. Let’s say you are a fantastic guitarist, but you are stuck in the military on operations. You find a gun in your hand far, far, far more often than a guitar. That environment denies you the resources you need to express your inherent talent with a guitar. In fact that environment might even bring out very subtle and otherwise hidden aspects of yourself which you never before knew were a part of you.

This is pretty much exactly what the signs do. They provide the environment in which the planets operate. They give the planets resources to do certain things, but not others. Jupiter, for example wants to help you grow and expand your horizons. But in some signs, Jupiter finds himself in an environment which makes this difficult or even impossible. There are no resources for him to complete his normal tasks. In such situations he will take up other avenues to express his inherent nature, ones that are less characteristic or “normal” for him.

So we have to get to know the 12 signs and the environment that they present to the planets who occupy them.

Getting back to popular astrology: People have gotten into the habit of saying “I am a Taurus” or what-have-you – identifying themselves completely with the sign that was the home, usually, of the Sun when they were born. This is not completely useless, at all. But it has huge limitations and flaws in comparison to more complete forms of astrology. True astrology considers all 12 signs to be active in different roles in each individual person.

The most useful “sign” I have found (as a result of both the logic of theory and the tangible results of practice) is the “sidereal rising sign” – the sign that was really rising over the eastern horizon when you were born. Knowing your sidereal rising sign will give you very solid and reliable information about yourself, but only about the generic trends or potentials. As we discuss the signs, never forget that every individual is an individual with a completely unique individual placement of planets throughout the 12 signs.

Why is Astrology so Confusing?

Keenya Woods painted this wonderful picture of "confusion"The main reason astrology is so confusing is that even the people who explain it are usually pretty darn unclear about what it is.

Why?

Because Earth is only just now gradually emerging from the Age of Darkness (“Kali-yuga”). The darkness of this age creates great confusion. During this time the tropical zodiac drifted out of sync from the sidereal zodiac – and no one seemed to notice or care. Instead they tried to invent new stuff to patch up the problem. Within a few hundred years all the beautiful simplicity and basic symmetry of ancient astrology got lost in a pile of new planets, new theories, new techniques, new ideas, etc.

Astrology got really confusing.

~ * ~ * ~

“What’s your sign?” she asks.

“Uhm, I am a Leo” he says.

“Oh, I hate Leos… but, uh… you’re pretty cute!”

For most people in the age of darkness this is the depth of their exposure to Astrology. So even if they meet a person who understands astrology clearly and simply – anything that person says is still going to go flying over their heads.

In this age of darkness, even the most simple and symmetrical things about astrology strike most of us as perplexing, complex and downright confusing.

~ * ~ * ~

So let me try to explain why there is a certain amount of complexity built in to astrology. Let’s take Venus for example. Everyone loves Venus. Everyone knows that she is the planet of romance and love and relationships.

OK, then some astrologer comes along and tells you about “houses“. That confused the hell out of you, because you are lucky to have even heard about Venus before, much less to know what the houses are. But since you are really into astrology, you do some homework and try to figure out what the houses are all about.

You find out that the 7th House is about relationships.

But wait, you thought Venus was about relationships?

It’s confusing. What’s what?

Why not take Aries as another example… you will learn that Aries is bold and headstrong and self-oriented. At first you think that means that everyone you meet in a bar who answers “uhm, I’m an Aries” is going to be bold, headstrong and selfish. But later on you learn more about astrology. You learn that it is not just signs it is also planets. In fact, it is mainly about the planets.

So far so good.

Until you read about Mars… bold… headstrong… self-willed.

But wait, isn’t that supposed to be Aries?

~ * ~ * ~

What I am illustrating is that you will initially find it confusing that a single trait can be represented by more than one astrological thing. There is a very important reason why any single trait has to be represented in more than just one astrological factor: convergence.

Here is how you can understand convergence. Get one of those combination locks, the cheap ones with the three or four rows of numbers. Inside them, each row has one slot cut out, one window through which the bolt can pass so that the lock can open. When you line up all the windows, all the right numbers on the lock – then all the windows converge; they line up and provide a complete path for the bolt to pass all the way out so that the lock can open.

You can get an initial grasp on how astrology works by applying that image.

Venus represents romance, for example – when she lines up with the 7th House, which also represents romance – you get a bigger convergence regarding romance. There is a bigger opening for the energy of romance to “unlock” and come out for the person.

When things line up together in astrology, the things about them that they have in common get bigger windows of opportunity – broader access to actually come out and become real in the person’s life.

Saturn, for example, is a planet that has something to do with you career and your work. But this facet of Saturn really unlocks and comes out when Saturn is  in the 10th House. Especially if he is in the 10th House in a sign that also has a good “window” for career – like Libra or Capricorn or Taurus, for example.

Venus, for example, is about all the things which make life better and more beautiful. Put her in the 7th house – which is about relationships – and the window opens up winder for her make life better and more pleasant through romance. Put her in the 11th House – the house of enjoyment – and a different window opens up – one in which she makes life better and more pleasant through appreciation for enjoyable things like art, music, dance, etc. and through financial profits.

Now, I hope, you might be starting to understand astrology at a deeper level. You might be starting to understand how to read the positions in a birth chart. But please don’t forget that you are only just starting.
