Spirituality in a Horoscope

Spirituality in a Horoscope

Often, people interested in astrology are interested in spirituality in general as well. Therefore astrologers often receive questions on this subject.

The fire triangle (houses 1, 5, and 9) represent different facets of religion and morality. The water triangle (houses 4, 8, and 12) represent different facets of the personal spiritual quest.

In the fire triangle, the first house pertains to personal character and individual morality. The fifth house pertains to the ability to practice, understand and learn moral and religious disciplines. The ninth house represents ones relationship to gurus, guides, etc. as well as to religion and religious institutions as well as the entire attitude towards philosophical subjects in total.

In the water triangle the eighth house represents mystical powers and ability to see the unseen or “occult” reality in the world (“siddhi”). The twelfth house pertains to ones humility and detachment from physical and worldly affairs, as well as the logic and knowledge which supports such attitudes (“jnana”). The fourth house – domain of the innermost self – pertains the the ultimate goal, self-realization and to the sublime understanding of the role of emotions in a spiritual setting (“bhakti”).

The sixth has been ascribed to “yoga” but this is mainly in the health-supporting sense of that word.

Among planets, look particularly at Ketu.

Planets in Signs and Houses

Planets in Signs and Houses

Addressing the issue of planets in signs and houses, many astrology teachers present their readers and students with copious descriptions of various effects of the various planets in the various signs and houses. That might be the last thing I would want to write, and certainly is the last thing I would want you to read. It is an endeavor that is both laborious and self-defeating. To do it correctly and describe the effect of each planet in each sign and each house would require 1,296 subheadings!

Obviously that would be grueling to write. It would be even more punishing to attempt to read and memorize. Even if we both went through the austerity of writing and reading those 1,296 descriptions we would still fall far short of the real conditions in an astrological chart, which posses 11,664 fundamental combinations.

Books with descriptions of planets in signs and houses are appealing, because they give the impression that astrology might be relatively simple. They are interesting and are good intellectual and intuitive exercises, but you cannot become a true astrologer by reading them. You cannot become a real astrologer by memorizing possible combinations, because the number of things you would have to memorize is impossible to manage. To become a true astrologer you have to learn how to think like an astrologer.

Of course, we benefit by contemplating the thought process of other astrologers. Not to memorize those thoughts directly, but to learn how astrologers think. I will focus on teaching you how to think in such a way that you can understand any planet in any house, sign, nakshatra, navamsha, etc.

Fundamental Parts of Astrology

Fundamental Parts of Astrology

He explained that there are many lights in the sky. Most of them stay put in the same places day after day. We call them stars. A very few of them don’t stay put, they constantly move about through the sky. We call them planets.

The planets move through a specific zone of stars. We call this zone the zodiac. We divide the zodiac in two main ways: in to 12 signs and 27 mansions.

There is one sign for each full moon that occurs during a normal year. Since there are 12 such full Moons, we have 12 signs. There is one mansion each day of the Moons cycle from full to new and back again. Since the moon takes just over 27 solar days to complete that cycle, we have 27 mansions.

There are 9 planets.

There are 12 houses. The sign that rises in the East becomes the First House, and the other eleven signs create the rest of the eleven houses in natural sequence.

The way the planets move within the signs, mansions and houses is the basis on which astrology can divine and predict the good and bad karma that will unfold at a given time and for a given person.

Planets Representing Houses

Planets Representing Houses

This graphic shows which planets naturally represent which houses. For example, the Moon is the primary planet who represents the Fourth House. But since the 4th House has several subjects, some other planets also represent the 4th house – specifically in regard to those subjects. Venus represents the fourth house in respect to vehicles, for example. Mars in respect to real-estate, and mercury in respect to the acquisition of degrees and certifications.
