Venus in the 12 Signs

Venus is the planet of our senses. She therefore largely determines our level of good behavior and our wealth. “Good behavior” means how well we go about enjoying our sensual lives. “Wealth” refers to the quality of sensual objects we have at our disposal.

The resources available in the sign that Venus occupies determine how Venus can manifest our good behavior and wealth. You can break down her relation to the sign owners like this:

Difficult

Neutral

Positive

Mars

Moon

Sun

Saturn

Mercury

Jupiter

Venus does not find it easy to create productive outcomes when she is in a sign that belongs to Mars. The main reason is that Mars’ resources are too passionate and independently ambitious. Venus in such an atmosphere becomes prone to selfishness and greed.

The Moon’s Cancer is a bit easier for Venus to work with, but still the Moon’s resources involve desire and emotion. Venus in such an environment is more susceptible to becoming overly passionate and desirous.

The resources of the Sun and Saturn are fairly neutral for Venus, meaning that they present as many challenges as opportunities.

Although Saturn is in the same camp as Venus, there are some unusual outcomes that become likely when Venus must operate through Saturn’s resources. She becomes prone towards making us enjoy unusual or unaccepted things. On the other hand Venus in Saturn’s signs is able to generate very enduring desirable results, too.

The Sun’s resources are slightly positive for Venus, although it again seems to go against the rule of “camps.” Venus here is able to produce power and success through beauty and females.

Venus can make good use of Mercury’s signs, but of these Virgo debilitates Venus. Therefore Venus’ good results in Virgo take a humble turn, and she becomes prone to forego personal happiness for the sake of serving the happiness of others. Gemini, on the other hand, is a place Venus can easily thrive in an artistic, enjoyable way.

Venus is surprisingly happy and productive in Jupiter’s signs. It’s a surprise because they are members of opposite “camps,” but the synergy is quite practical. Jupiter’s resources provide excellent moral guidance to Venus, who therefore becomes more capable of producing good character and true happiness. Pisces, in particular exalts Venus.

Of course, like every planet, Venus operates quite well in her own signs.

To look at this topic from an elemental point of view, Venus seems very neutral to all the elements but does better in the more moderate elements: air and, especially, earth.

Venus in fire signs raises a danger of our sensuality becoming too “hot” but this only really becomes a strong issue in Aries, where Mars rules. It is less of an issue in the Sun’s Leo. In Sagittarius it is entirely overcome by the moral guidance of Jupiter.

Venus in water signs presents a danger of becoming too sensually desirous, but again this is entirely overcome in Pisces due to the influence of Jupiter there. It is somewhat of a concern in Cancer and a definite issue in Mars’ Scorpio.

Air signs give Venus the ability to be smart and intellectual about pleasures, though this outcome is less easy to obtain in full from Saturn’s Aquarius. It is particularly ample, on the other hand, in Mercury’s Gemini.

Earth signs allow Venus to be grounded yet powerful about how we can enjoy life. In Saturn’s Capricorn this can more easily wind up in a negative permutation. In Mercury’s Virgo this grounding causes humility and a servile attitude about enjoyment. The positive ramifications of Venus in an earth sign are most abundant in Venus’ own Taurus.

Symbols and Glyphs of Astrology

Symbols and Glyphs of Astrology

I am a huge fan of the glyphs developed in the West to represent the signs and planets. The essential meaning of every planet and sign is encoded into these fascinating symbols.

Glyphs for the Planets

Each planet’s glyph is made of the same primary symbols: a circle and a cross.

The circle is symbolic of life. The top of the circle is your original self, the bottom of the circle is your material identity. Life is a cyclic process of the original self transforming into a material being and then returning to a truer understanding of itself.

The cross is the symbol of effort. “We all have our crosses to bear.” The specific location of the cross on the circle reveals a lot about the meaning of a planets glyph.

There are two secondary symbols used in the glyphs: the half-circle and the arrow.

The half-circle is symbolic of evolution and development. The exact type of half-circle used in a specific glyph reveals a lot about it’s exact symbolism for that planet.

The arrow is simply a blurred cross, distorted due to the energy of the arrow’s movement. Only Mars has the energy to transform the cross of effort  into the arrow of ambition.

The Sun’s glyph is a circle with a dot in the middle. The circle is life. The dot in the middle of the circle is symbolic of the fact that the Sun is the center of all things in life. The center of life is your identity – the core of your conscious awareness.

The Moon’s glyph looks a lot like the moon, which is handy. It is the only glyph without a complete circle in it. Instead the left side of the circle has folded over or reflected to the right so that there are two half circles linked together on the right, making the characteristic crescent moon shape. Why? The Moon is your emotional self, a tricky reflection that creates and satisfies feelings of incompleteness which arise from our interest in a world of dualities.

The half-circle represents evolution. The Moon (emotions) allows evolution in both directions – towards the true self and away from it.

Mercury’s glyph is a circle with a cross at the bottom and a half circle at the top. The cross at the bottom shows that Mercury facilitates the effort for the true self to become a real manifestation in the material world. The half circle at the top is unique to Mercury. It shows that he alone can truly facilitate the evolution towards the higher self. This glyph encapsulates in a single symbol the fact that Mercury is your intelligence, which creates the ability to communicate as well as understand.

Venus’ glyph is like Mercury’s, without the half circle at the top. She gives you a physical body replete with fascinating senses through which you can truly experience the wonderful manifest world in your life.

Mars’ glyph is a circle with an arrow (a distorted cross) at an odd angle towards the top of the circle. This symbolizes that Mars is your energy. He is the passion and ambition which prods you to going off in your own unique direction with your own angle on life.

Jupiter’s glyph is a cross supporting the right side of a half circle. The right side of the circle represents evolution towards a deeper understanding of life. Jupiter is supportive of this effort. He encourages it and rewards it and provides the systems of religion, philosophy, and law which do the same.

Saturn’s glyph is a cross to which the right side of the circle is affixed and bound. The evolution towards a deeper understanding of life is nailed to the inescapable realities which Saturn generates: death, old age, decay and misery. We evolve by coming to grips with these realities.

Rahu’s glyph has no cross. In fact only the five real planets have crosses and represent effort. The Sun, Moon and the two nodes Rahu and Ketu are not literally planets. Their glyphs contain no crosses. They manifest their nature without any effort or evolution required.

Rahu and Ketu are the only planets to contain two complete circles. Their glyphs consist of these two circles joined by the arc of a half circle. The two circles represent two different lives, two different worlds. Rahu’s arc connects the two – bridging the present to the future, creating the ability and need to move upward and outward, and causing the possibility of nearly instantaneous change and movement.

Ketu’s glyph is identical to Rahu’s except that Ketu connects the two circles with a downward arc, while Rahu does so with an upward arc. This glyph symbolizes Ketu’s essential nature as a like between the present and the past, the ability and need to move inward and downward with the possibility of nearly instantaneous change and movement in those directions.

Sign Glyphs

Aries is the beginning of the zodiac – where the one (at the bottom) splits and becomes many (at the top). This symbolizes the tremendous energy and ambition of life itself.

In Taurus the energy forms a stable unit (a circle) which is like a womb for the new energy of life. The circular womb will cause things to grow and develop upwards (the half circle at the top).

Gemini is the sign in which the incubated energy of creation is born and becomes a distinctly separate being. The many created at the beginning by Aries have developed by the support of taurus, and now become a second being, a truly individual self capable of its own experiences and ideas.

In Cancer there are two circles attempting to connect. The new being of Gemini finds that she wishes to integrate her new self with her former self. Therefore Cancer is a place where energy directs inwards and emotions are examined rather privately.

Leo begins a new cycle of evolution – the evolution to understand our own powers. A newly integrated single circle moves sets out with a new identity.

Virgo‘s glyph like taurus, creates circles. The three lines of the “m” represent the three layers of the world. The last line of the “m” weaves around itself, creating circular environments. In Virgo the newfound personal power of Leo enters these circles and attempts to more deeply and practically understand and express itself.

Libra‘s glyph evokes both a balance and an equal sign. It shows a balance of desire to work equally with the world as well as on it. In Libra we attempt to achieve the delicate balance between our own personal strength and the personal strengths possessed by the other people in the world, to whom we relate.

In Scorpio we complete the mastery of our own powers. Thus an arrow develops at the end of the three lines – the three layers of the world. This shows that we and now ready to move to a new stage and apply our newly understood personal power on a higher level.

Sagittarius’ glyph shows the arrow which appeared in Scorpio moving beyond the line of the “new level” of operation. Thus, in this sign we begin to truly explore the various ways in which we can develop ourselves on higher levels.

Capricorn’s glyph, like Taurus and Virgo before it, possesses circles. The straight lines from Sagittarius resolve into curves which create circles. This glyph shows that the new levels we discovered in Sagittarius can now enter a safe “womb” and incubate here to become more deeply and stably realized.

The glyph of Aquarius, like Gemini and Libra before it, is dominated by two lines. These lines are wavy, showing that Capricorn’s effort to evolve a deeper understanding of life are now vibrant with power and potential.

Pisces‘ glyph is two half circles bound together by a line. In Pisces we reach the end of one cycle of evolution. The new levels we discovered in Sagittarius, developed in Capricorn and expressed in Aquarius are now ready in Pisces to bear their final, deepest fruit: the ability to transfer us to an entirely new cycle of evolution. One of the half circles is the end of the old cycle. The line is Pisces effort to transport us to the other half circle, the beginning of a new cycle of evolution.

Venus: Making the World a Better Place

Venus makes the tangible, empiric world better and more satisfying.

~ * ~ * ~

Remember when you were standing on your island, looking at the shore of the world? Mercury built a bridge into that world – and off you went. What did you find?

You found two things:

- Objects

- Other people

These discoveries caused Mercury to evolve into Venus.

Objects / Senses

When you encountered objects, what did you do? You tried to understand them. You named them, categorized them, etc. This was great, but not completely fulfilling. You wanted to feel, smell, taste, hear and see the stuff in the world, not just intellectually understand it.

And so Venus emerged. She gave you a body, with senses to fully experience the objects in your world.

Other People / Cooperation

When you crossed the bridge and went into the world you found more than just objects, you also found other people. That’s a little bit dangerous, isn’t it? I mean, what if that other guy over there wants to feel, smell, taste, hear and see the same objects that you do? You are going to need to cooperate! This is another catalyst for the creation of Venus – who gives to human beings the ability to cooperate, form relationships, make marriages, be peaceful, and experience the joy of love – the ultimate goal of relationships in the first place.

A BODY WITH THE ENERGY TO ENJOY LIFE

The first duty of Venus is to let you fully enjoy your experience of life. To fulfill this duty, the first thing she does is give you a real, solid, physical body.

Have you stopped, ever, to ask yourself what a “body” is?

A body is a network of senses: Eyes, ears, nose, mouth and skin – all put together in a package that is mobile with hands and feet. It is the machine through which you can tangibly interact with your world.

So, first of all, Venus gives you a body and senses. She grants to this body of senses a certain degree of what the japanese call 元気 (“Genki” – presence of energy), what we call “virility.” In other words Venus gives you a body and invests it with strength, health and power to function enjoyably.

MAKING OBJECTS MORE ENJOYABLE

Venus gives us senses and the energy that vitalizes them, and she also grants us the ability to improve the sense objects we can experience. For example she gives you an ear and the enthusiasm to listen to things – and then she also gives you the ability to create beautiful music.

That’s why lots of people associate Venus with “art.” Art is the talent of making beautiful and satisfying objects of perception. Venus controls all the arts: painting and the visual arts, music, cooking, making perfumes, and the erotic and sensual arts of touch.

Somethings are naturally desirable and beautiful. Flowers, for example. No one needs to make them beautiful – they just are. Venus creates flowers. From the cooling touch of marble or the soft touch of velvet, to the soothing sounds of streams and birdsong, to the fragrance and color of flowers, to the beauty of a lover’s enchanting eyes – Venus creates the natural beauty in all people and things.

So Venus creates things with inherent desirability, and she also creates in human beings the arts and talents to make things even more desirable than they naturally are.

MAKING RELATIONSHIPS MORE ENJOYABLE

When it comes right down to it, thinking that senses alone provide for a happy and satisfying life is an infantile attitude. People are much more important than things, and relationships are therefore much more important than sense objects.

Venus helps you realize this.

And just as Venus concerns herself with making the sense objects as enjoyable as they can be, she also concerns herself with making relationships as satisfying and fulfilling as possible. Here is how:

Cooperation

A relationship can’t go anyplace good without this fundamental quality. Without knowing how to cooperate, we simply can’t enjoy relationships. Venus grants us the ability to be cooperative.

Peace

We can’t really be cooperative unless we are peaceful. Peace is the opposite of war. War happens when you get what you want by force. Peace then, is what happens when you don’t give undue attention to what you want. The less you are concerned with fulfilling your own personal desires, the more peaceful you become. This holds true in politics as well. A nation with a passionate agenda that it values above any other nation’s will find itself constantly at war. Whereas the ability to subordinate the nations agenda to a broader international agenda promotes peaceful global relations.

When you are not driven by your own desires you become peaceful. A peaceful person can easily cooperate with others. Peace and cooperation both come from Venus, in her effort to make your world a better place to live in.

Love

Why would you want to subordinate your desires to someone else’s? You wouldn’t, unless you love that person. Love means valuing the needs of another person. Venus blesses the world with love, because this is the root from which peace sprouts, and from peace cooperative relationships can  form.

Marriage

The archetype of all cooperative relationships is marriage. Venus creates marriages and blesses them to be happy and fulfilling. Good marriages are impossible without being founded on love, because love causes an individual to be at peace with their own personal desires, which allows one to cooperate fully with their partner.

SUMMARY

Venus makes the tangible, empiric world better and more satisfying.

A horoscope with a very positive and influential Venus would create a person who is very loving, peaceful, cooperative and unselfish. They would have bright senses and appreciate the beauty and divinity in all the things in this world. They would create even more beauty by their very nature and their artistic talents.

Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars

Women are Venus and Men are Mars.

Study the astrological theories of what those planets are and you will see that this concept is valid. It also illustrates that the crowning glory of femininity is to make the world a place worth living in – for all human beings.

Astrologically, Venus’ main motivation is to make the real world a better place. Therefore she creates peace by instilling love, harmony and cooperation. Mars on the other hand desires to command the world and conquer it. He therefore creates wars as a result of selfishness and the aggressions which invariably ensure.

Venus is the primary source of estrogen and Mars the primary source of testosterone (entering the realm of medical astrology). You can verify this by observing the distinct effects of the the two hormones. Estrogen creates a harmonizing, beneficial, pleasant and peaceful motivation, taking pains upon itself to do so, in fact. Testosterone, on the other hand, creates a self-oriented ambition, along with the aggression, enthusiasm, and drive required to achieve that ambition.

I never read the book, Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars. But the title is great, and very valid.
