Party with the Planets: Jupiter

When we get up to leave Saturn there is no one around us. Venus is tending to  others and Mercury has disappeared mingling into the crowd. None of the other party-goers are looking in Saturn’s direction, of course. So we sort of aimlessly meander back out into the front room.

Mercury is back in this room. And he enthusiastically waves to us and comes over to share a few more witty and poetic jokes. But oddly he does not offer to help us meet the rest of the planets. So I guess this is where I come in. I walk you over to meet the other planet in the front room.

He is a large man, tall, thick and wide – sturdy and handsome with a strong and broad chest. His complexion is light and fair, and his hair lightening from brown and even a little bit blonde. He is the first planet you have met who looks you straight in the eye all the time – with soft brown eyes. It is the honest, straightforward glance of a man with no reason to hide anything or play any games.

“I’m sorry I did not introduce myself earlier,” he says in a voice so deep, powerful and resonant that the very floor seems to vibrate with it’s baritone. “You were with Mercury and I did not want to interrupt. I am Jupiter.”

Jupiter! You are actually meeting Jupiter!

And you would never have thought that the guru of all the planets would be so modest as to apologize for something like this. Even Jupiter’s clothes radiate modesty. He wears only a simple saffron-yellowed cloth wrapped around his waist, and another draped around his wide shoulders, which display perfect posture. Neither garment has any frill or print.

“It is an honor to meet you,” You manage to say. “Please don’t apologize.”

“Yes, please don’t!” I chime in. Jupiter seems to bringing out the delicate manners even in us!

Jupiter smiles. “What do you think of the people you have met thus far?” He inquires.

“It is a fantastic opportunity!” You express.

“Ah! It is exciting to meet important people, isn’t it! Such an opportunity to grow! What have you learned from those you have met tonight?”

Now it dawns on you. This really is Jupiter. Always delicately encouraging us to think, and to learn… to grow. He is the ideal teacher! “Well,” As speak a look of tremendous satisfaction came over Jupiter – as if your putting on your thinking cap is incredibly enjoyable for him to witness. “From Mercury I would say I learned that intelligence is all about our ability to share things, and thoughts, with other people in fascinating ways. He really enjoys talking!”

“Yes! Excellent!!!” Jupiter’s voice booms over the dim of the party with heartfelt satisfaction at the knowledge you have gained.

“And Venus,” you continue, “She is so natural. I learned that beauty is a natural thing which springs from being kind and helpful, not from just wearing jewelry or putting on makeup.”

“Indeed. She is charming,” answers Jupiter, a bit more reserved than before. “What of Saturn. Did he speak with you?”

“Yes.”

Jupiter’s thick eyebrows raised in appreciation. What did you discuss with that ancient and all-knowing creature?

“It’s strange how weak Saturn appears. How frail – but how he wound up giving me so much strength! He made me see through all the silly things that normally make me so nervous and self-conscious.”

“Yes,” Jupiter answered in firm, if somewhat distant, appreciation of Saturn. “Now, come! I will introduce you to the others.”

Party with the Planets: Mercury

The front room of the party suite is pretty packed with people, but right away it is easy for us to see the bright aura around two very, very obvious personalities. One of them is walking directly towards us!

The sweat glands under your armpits are pinching and hurting. This is amazing!

An absolutely beautiful person stands before you – the most beautiful person you have ever laid eyes on. Perfect balance and symmetry marks every facial feature, every bodily limb! Could this be a man? It can’t be! But is it?

Wait, does this mean it is Mercury who is walking up to you? When we were preparing for this day, we learned that Mercury is the most bi-gendered of all the planets. Is this what it means? Perfectly balanced features. Perfect balance and poise in every step. Beauty that a female would kill to possess, but an equal amount of male sharpness and confidence…

You drifted off into thought and are startled back to the present moment by a delicate, articulate voice. “The leaves of the door have parted, and a frightened faun emerges in the forest of this wondrous party! Lucky for you, my dear, I am no hunter! I am merely your mate, Mercury.”

WHOA!

This is a bit of a shock! You expected mercury to be in the corner reading a book, or discussing science statistics with nerds around a bare table. I mean, you thought Mercury was the planet of intelligence! God, now it is so clear, though.

“I seem to not be what I was supposed to seem?” he turned to me and asked.

“Well, you know.” I replied, really throughly enjoying this opportunity to converse with the master of conversation, and absolutely incapable of matching his metaphoric expertise in even the slightest. “People sort of expect intelligence to be boring.”

He turned back to you now. But now you notice that he never, ever, looks straight at anyone he is taking to. Instead he holds his head to the side and looks playfully and almost flirtatiously out of the corners of his eyes, always with a bright smile on his lips. Those, amazing lips…. And then the whole gender question pops up again…

“Did he not paint a picture of me as a bridge?” he asks you, referring to how I prepared you to meet the planets. “He always does. A nice japanese bridge I hope, not one of cold iron and steel above a river of pollution!”

“Yes!” you exclaim. “Yes! You are the bridge!”

“Have you ever met a bridge that stands on only one shore? Bridges must reach out to other shores and communicate! So, when you entered the room I was drawn to you immediately. Let me introduce you to some of the others!”

It is not likely that anyone else is enjoying the party as much as Mercury. That much is obvious. He (“she”?) spins around, even his body language communicating volumes – always perfect equipoise and balance. His complexion is wondrous – there is a brownish yellow tint in it. Not sickly at all but so unusual and non-human, unless somewhat like a beautiful asian woman! This skin tone is set off by the immaculate but dark colored clothing he wears neatly and well tailored.

He is introducing us to everyone, all the party goers, almost seeming like he prefers them to the planets here, or at least considers them equals. We spend a good half hour delightfully accompanying Mercury as he mingles with the party goers. He is a master of wit, always joking and laughing in the most intellectual, yet thoroughly funny ways. Language barriers disappear around him and everyone becomes friends wherever he goes, at least temporarily forgetting whatever they may have against one another.

KETU – the Inward Compulsion

Like Rahu, Ketu is the source of

Transformation

Anti-Authority

Radicalism

Compulsions

Chaos

& Polarity

But while Rahu’s transformative chaos is focused forward and outward, Ketu’s focus is backward and inward.

The Past

The Underground and Inner Space

THE OTHER HALF OF RAHU

Ketu and Rahu are two halves of the same entity, the same planet. And so they share many of the same fundamental traits for the same reasons.

They both create the force of change and transformation. Ketu’s transformations though, are more instantaneous and sudden than Rahu’s. They occur when something from your inaccessible subconscious past suddenly bursts  fully formed, into your conscious awareness and shocks you into an abrupt change.

Under Rahu, for example, you change your lifestyle dramatically because you see a better future for yourself. But Ketu causes you to suddenly understand or “remember” something about yourself which makes you abruptly change your outlook and direction.

~ * ~ * ~

Rahu and Ketu are both anti-authoritarian but Rahu is more of a social revolutionary while Ketu is more of a private, personal non-conformist.

Che Guevara, for example, is a product of Rahu whereas Ketu creates the “goth” figure dressed in torn black clothes glaring out from the corner dressed in amulets etc. The person who changes the world to match themselves is Rahu. The person who refuses to change themselves to match the world is Ketu. Yes, they are two sides of the same coin – just like Rahu and Ketu are two halves of the same entity.

Ketu and Rahu are both radicals but you could perhaps say that Rahu is a radical liberal while Ketu is a radical conservative. If you have ever dealt closely with either type of person, you know they are really quite similar in the end. They both want abrupt and drastic changes, but the radical liberal wants those changes because they want to build a better future. The radical conservative wants similar changes, because they want to return to a better past.

~ * ~ * ~

Rahu and Ketu both create chaos in the wake of their changes and transformations. But Rahu’s chaos mainly affects the external conditions of your life, while Ketu’s chaos affects your inner being. They are both polar. But Rahu’s polarity is visible, while Ketu’s polarity takes you through the emotional and psychic extremes.

Rahu will change you from rich to poor and poor to rich. Ketu will not affect your external situation as much as he will change you from happy to sad and sad to happy, etc. Rahu is the person whose world is falling apart or radically transforming around them. Ketu is the one whose world is fine, but whose insides are in radical turmoil.

~ * ~ * ~

Rahu and Ketu both compulsive and untamable in every way. Ketu however will create more deep seated and private compulsion, while Rahu will make exaggerated public displays.

The person who must shout his opinions to the world and force people to hear what he has to say is the one driven by Rahu. On the other hand, the shy person who compels your curiosity and intrigue is Ketu. The person who is compelled to change the world is driven by Rahu. The person who is compelled to change himself, driven by Ketu.

To make a real change you need both halves of Rahu and Ketu. You can not truly change the world without changing yourself, and you cannot truly change your inner self without changing your outer behavior.

THE PAST

Like Rahu, Ketu has no mass. It does not take up space, and is therefore not subject to the normal rules of space/time. Rahu and Ketu can therefore transcend the boundaries of space and time. While Rahu moves outward and forward towards the future, Ketu moves inward and backward towards the past.

Ketu connects the present to the past. Rahu shows the direction you are supposed to evolve towards in your future. Ketu shows what you have already mastered and evolved beyond.

The difficult thing is that our minds are, in comparison to our souls at least, quite small. We are consciously aware of only a tiny fraction of our past. Ketu holds on to all the past that our conscious mind cannot directly access. These unknown memories compel you to know certain things, need certain things, hate certain things, etc. You do not know why you know it. You can not explain why you are so talented in some area. You do not know why you feel so strongly attracted to or repulsed by something. Only Ketu remembers the ancient past mysteriously affecting every aspect of your present.

Those who have Ketu powerful in their horoscope can see directly into the past. They have greater access to the things previously mastered in their past lives. For example, a child who sits at a piano and composes a symphony while still 5 years old is gifted by Ketu to access his or her masteries accomplished over previous lifetimes. Ketu is the force creating prodigies.

Ketu creates mind-readers and oracles who can see the past with clarity. But Ketu also creates the scientists and researchers who dig into the earth and uncover the record of her geological and cultural past. Archeologists and geologists, for example, spring from Ketu.

THE UNDERWORLD & INNER SPACE

Ketu is not about the sky and outer space, but about what is buried beneath,  inner space. Ketu does not want to know the outer layer of anything, it wants to get directly to the central core. Ketu is the power to get to the core of anything.

Therefore Ketu goes not up into space, but down into the Earth; into the underworld. It is said in most cultures that the underworld is populated by mystical serpents, snakes, and dragons. All cultures depict Ketu and Rahu as a serpent or dragon. Ketu is the master of the underworld, akin to Pluto of Greek mythology. He is the serpent who knows the hidden secrets of your primordial past.

All persons obsessed with the underworld and with secrets have strong Ketu in their horoscope. Ketu is the master of such things, and thus is the planet who can grant knowledge of secrets, ordinary and divine.

Anyone who digs into the earth is driven by Ketu. All things which come out of the earth have something to do with Ketu, especially oil and products made from it like films, plastics, petroleum, etc.

Ketu is the compulsion to get to the core of things. What is really at the core of all things?

The Sun is the center of everything. The Sun is consciousness, the “soul.”

Ketu takes human beings on a journey through inner space, to find their own cores, their own souls. Rahu makes people love the idea of journeying in spaceships to other planets – but Ketu makes you passionate about the idea of traveling through trance into the inner space of your own being. That is why Ketu is the master of drugs. And it is also why Ketu is the master of those who attain spiritual liberation as a result of meditation and renunciation. Ketu pulls your thoughts away from the surface world and down deep inside yourself. A blessed Ketu will take you all the way to the spiritual emancipation of knowing your own soul directly. But a hampered Ketu may not be able to take you past the fantasy realms and delusory escapism of intoxication.

Ketu is the greatest force of depression, because it drains our interest in normal, superficial life – which is the most readily available source of pleasure for human beings. Those who fearlessly tread Ketu’s path discover unlimited bliss and are not depressed about losing the shallow and superficial pleasures of the world. From Ketu they acquire a blessing more profound than any other planet could bestow. But those who hesitate and resist Ketu’s pull are torn apart and become lost in a confusing haze of depression – ever aching to return to the comforts of the superficial world.

SUMMARY

Ketu is the irresistible call of the unknown past, generating the compulsion to revolt against the superficial world by withdrawing into the inner space of your own self.

RAHU: Destroyer of Now, Creator of Tomorrow

Transformation

Anti-Authority

Radical Liberalism

Compulsion

Chaos

Polarity

The Future

The Sky and Outer Space

These are the realms of the mysterious planet Rahu.

~ * ~ * ~

We have discussed all the visible planets. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn – all have evolved and we have explored the role of each. There are two more “planets” remaining to understand. They did not evolve – for they are the very power of evolution itself.

They are invisible points in the sky which cause the Sun and Moon to blackout. They cause eclipses. An eclipse is a visible demonstration of their  absolute power to completely reverse things create the chaos of change, transformation, and evolution.

Their names are Rahu and Ketu. They are a separated pair – two sides of the same entity.

First, to understand Rahu…

THE POWER OF TRANSFORMATION

Rahu is the power of transformation – that alone is his singular, fundamental trait. You can learn everything else about Rahu just by always keeping this in mind.

The very story of Rahu’s birth centers around his ability to transform himself from one shape into another!

If it were not for Rahu, nothing would evolve, nothing would change. Anything you have ever done to change yourself – and any change that has ever happened in humanity or on Earth itself, has all happened with the power invested by Rahu.

Rahu and his other half, Ketu, both create the power of transformation – but Rahu’s sort of transformation is specifically the kind that impels you forward and makes you think about making the future better. He impels you forward and outward.

Rahu is the force that compels you radically change your lifestyle – trying to improve your future and make your outer self a better reflection of your inner potentials.

DOWN WITH AUTHORITIES! SMASH TRADITIONS!

Since Rahu always wants to improve things, he makes a lot of serious enemies right off the bad. Authorities hate Rahu, and those who cling to traditional ways also despise him.

As you can see Rahu is revolution. Every single revolution that has ever occurred in history did so because of Rahu’s effect on the human race. All revolutionaries are manifestations of Rahu.

Non-conformists, too. Rahu has no love for tradition! He is concerned with the future, not the past. He wants to make things evolve, not stay the same. Therefore he is the antithesis of tradition, the bane of hierarchy, the reviler of authority.

He is a wild radical liberal.

All cultures depict Rahu as a serpent, dragon or snake. This is why traditional cultures despise snakes so deeply. They even go so far as to call Rahu the Devil. In the biblical Garden of Eden, for example, Rahu was the serpent who inspired mankind to make themselves better than what they were, to be unafraid of change, to be unfettered by authority – to eat the apple from the from the tree of knowledge.

Christianity portrays this story in a very negative light – because Christianity is a fundamentally traditional and conservative culture. They paint Rahu as “Satan”, the ultimate force of evil. In fact it is quite interesting that Christians and most conservatives of all denominations rather vehemently hate concepts of “evolution” – since Rahu, the serpent, is the force of evolution itself.

All sorts of people moved by radical liberal energy are manifesting the power of Rahu. The revolutionaries, the protestors, the anarchists, the dissidents, the rebels – all are Rahu’s offspring. They receive very little love from society. By majority, society is always a flock that clings to the safety of tradition and authority. Thus Rahu’s offspring become the outcasts, misfits, and fringe elements of any society.

FOUNTAINHEAD OF PURE CHAOS

In a sense, the conservatives are right. Rahu is very, very, very dangerous. They are way too scared of him and don’t know how to embrace his power in good measure for positive growth, but still, you can see their point of view to some extent. If you let them, the radical forces of change will create pure chaos.

Rahu is the dark fountainhead from which pure chaos flows.

That’s why astrologers tend to connect him with confusion and uncertainty. Rahu brings transformation. Transformation causes revolutions. Revolution means destruction of the old ways to make room for the new. Destruction causes chaos and rubble and dust and smoke and thus makes it difficult to see anything clearly. We become confused.

Rahu on his own, untamed by any other planetary influence, would create a world of constant revolution – pure destruction, pure chaos, pure confusion and uncertainty.

Thankfully, he is almost never completely untamed.

UNCONTROLLED URGES, COMPULSIONS

I hope that my description of Rahu so far is at least making it clear that this planet is fantastically and wildly powerful? He is the ability to topple a government, the ability to make the Sun itself go black! His power is greater than even the Sun’s! He is wild and uncontrollable.

Thus he is the cause of compulsive behavior, uncontrollable urges, overwhelming emotions which can not be stopped. He is the wild thing within you.

POLARITY AND DIAMETRIC OPPOSITES

Because Rahu is such a wild and unbridled force of change, you could well describe him as “polar” or “bi-polar” (as if a pole would could be tri-polar or uni-polar? I never quite understand the need for “bi” at the beginning of “polar”, but whatever). Rahu’s radicalism is so extreme that it will run you through the entire spectrum of changes.

Under the influence of powerful Rahu a woman becomes a nun, but winds up in pornography. She is pushed through the entire spectrum of change and evolution – from one extreme to the other.

Rahu does this with a purpose – or at least, there is a positive purpose to be gained: under Rahu’s “guidance” you will see it all. Having seen it all, you can later on try to make sense out of everything. Rahu’s cycle in your life is like a chaotic revolution. It is only really after the revolution is over – after Rahu has subsided – that we can establish a new, hopefully better, society and prosperity.

Persons with the ability to grasp opposite things at the same time are blessed by Rahu. People who are unable to maintain balance, but flip back and forth in a “bipolar” pattern are cursed by the same energy.

THE FUTURE

Rahu and his other half, Ketu, are not ordinary planets. They have no mass, they occupy no actual physical space – therefore they are not bound by the normal laws of space and time. As a result they transcend the boundaries between here and there, past and present and future.

Rahu specifically bridges the present to the future. Those who can see the future do so as a result of Rahu’s power. This includes acolytes of divination as well as it includes scientists and inventors who foresee things like electric lights and handheld communicators, and then make them a reality in the present.

Rahu always sees the future, and that is why he tries to revolutionize and change the present. He sees the future, and then works on the present to make it change and become the future.

UP, UP, AND AWAY – THE SKY AND SPACE

Just as Rahu’s awareness focuses on the future, it also focuses on moving upward and outward. The great sky is Rahu’s domain. And even more so is the void of outer space beyond.

Rahu is the force behind science fiction. In fact the reason why we associate flying and spaceships with the future is because Rahu rules both: he rules the future and he rules outer space and the sky. Rahu is the master of airplanes, spaceships, and all futuristic forms of travel like teleportation.

In our recent history we have dabbled with space exploration. Interestingly, at least in America, it has been very connected with liberal presidents and government platforms. This is because Rahu, who is the master of space and space travel, is also the prime force of liberalism and radicalism.

SUMMARY

Outer space and the sky is a symbol of our future. Rahu wants to transform the present into the future and therefore tends to destroy it, creating a full spectrum of chaos as he goes about toppling old systems of tradition and outmoded authority figures. He does all this so that he can transform us from what we are into what we must become.

~ * ~ * ~

Rahu is the present transforming into future.
